Orlando Ennes Workshop on Fri, October 5 includes lightning protection, SNMP tutorial, trends in TV infrastructure

The schedule and topics are coming together for the Orlando Ennes Workshop in Walt Disney World® on October 5.  Confirmed topics include Here Comes Ethernet® with Steve Lampen from Belden.  This session will shed light on how IEEE, which owns the Ethernet standard, has been working on a re-write of the Ethernet standard called 802.1BA AVB, and the AVB is for audio and video bridging.  Brad Plant from Ross Video will discuss audio watermarking for audience measurement, followed by the Engineer’s Guide to the process of automating control of news productions and explains the many benefits for adopting automated production control technology in your facility. Dave Brender at the Copper Development Association will talk about the elements of a building’s wiring and grounding systems (including lightning protection) that pertain to power quality at communications facilities and improve up-time. His presentation sites actual experiences at broadcast facilities where grounding and lightning protection were of paramount importance in maintaining system availability.

Ennes Workshop, held May 2012 in El Paso

Tony Peterle presents a tutorial on SNMP, which includes an explanation of how SNMP works – the structure and types of SNMP messages, how they are transported over the network, and how they can be used to monitor and control remote equipment. He will also explore in-depth SNMP communications with at least two different target devices – one a well-known transmitter line, and at least one other device from outside the broadcast world (SNMP is found in many devices such as UPS systems, HVAC systems, IT systems, etc).

Norbert Miles, who attended the El Paso Ennes Workshop, said, ” The Ennes Workshop plays a very important part and key element and tool for keeping up with today’s technological advances in the broadcasting industry.” Well said!

Cleveland Ennes Workshop presents latest trends in broadcast engineering

Cleveland Ennes Workshop participants

Jon Hanson of SPX Communication Technologies explores the advantages of electromagnetic simulation.

The Cleveland Ennes Workshop, a day jam-packed with the latest in broadcast engineering, took place yesterday, June 13. It was good to see everyone having  a great time connecting with other engineers while learning about audio compression, the future of ENG technology, trends in TV infrastructure, the advantages of electromagnetic simulation, RF power meter selection, broadcast structures, and so much more. Thanks to SBE Chapter 70 for hosting this program and the sponsors and presenters.

Lynn Strube of Bird Technologies discusses selecting a RF power meter.

Workshop participant Ed Miller, CPBE, said, “Topics were timely, substantive and efficiently presented…very cost-effective format.”

Kudos to all involved. If you are interested in attending an Ennes Workshop, check out the Orlando Ennes Workshop, which takes place Friday, October 5.

hosted by SBE Chapter 14 and the Connecticut Broadcasters Association

Cleveland and El Paso are both hosting the Ennes Workshop, presented by SBE, this spring.  These workshops are affordable, day long programs geared toward broadcast engineers.  The Ennes Workshops are packed with information, technology and helpful tidbits for the busy engineer who cannot afford to get away from his or her job often.  A light breakfast and lunch are included, and the program runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The program varies from area to area.  Subjects for both of these workshops include audio compression technology, designing and implementing a broadcast facility control and monitoring system incorporating SNMP, sending video fast and inexpensively; the future of radio automation; TV and radio broadcast structure engineering, and more.

Thank you to SBE Chapter 70 and SBE Chapter 38 for hosting these workshops.

TV Technology features article on the Ennes Workshop at NAB

Fred Baumgartner, CPBE, CBNT, who develops the Ennes Workshops, wrote a great article on what to expect from this year’s Ennes Workshop at the NAB Show. This is worth reading even if you aren’t planning to attend. The workshop takes place this Saturday, April 14 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Room S225 beginning at 8 a.m. PDT. Be sure to register with the NAB if you wish to attend.

Must read Radio World articles on CBNE and Ennes Workshop

Anticipating the release of the new Certified Broadcast Networking Engineer (CBNE) certification? Take a look at this recent Radio World article with a list of books to use when studying for the exam.  We will have an announcement about CBNE next week. Stay tuned!

Heading to the NAB Show? Here’s a great article in the March 28 Radio World issue of what to expect during the Ennes Workshop by Fred Baumgartner, CPBE, CBNT. Jerry Whitaker’s presentation “The Tube Sound: Fact of Fiction?” during the Saturday program is sure to be a crowd pleaser!
