Ennes Educational Trust Creates New Scholarship to Recognize Gino Ricciardelli

Trust also increases scholarship amount and agrees to fund an updated SBE CertPreview

Ennes Educational Foundation TrustThe Harold Ennes Educational Foundation Trust, the educational foundation that grants scholarships and funds presentation of broadcast engineering-related educational programs, seminars and workshops, and helps underwrite costs with publishing technical books and manuals, has added a new scholarship to its current offerings. Gino RicciardelliThe new scholarship is in recognition of Gino Ricciardelli, an SBE Charter, Life and Fellow member who died in 2018. Ricciardelli, a long-time supporter of the SBE and the Ennes Educational Trust, and member of SBE Chapter 1, willed a significant part of his estate to the Trust.

With the new addition, the Trust now offers five scholarships:

• John H. Battison SBE Founder’s Scholarship (open to anyone)
• Harold E. Ennes Scholarship (open to anyone)
• Robert D. Greenberg Scholarship (open to anyone)
• Gino Ricciardelli Scholarship (open to anyone)
• Youth Scholarship (specifically for graduating high school seniors)

The addition was made at the trustees’ meeting on May 19, 2020. In addition, the trustees also voted to increase the amount of each scholarship from $1,500 to $2,500. Scholarships are awarded annually based on eligible applications received by July 1.

Ennes Trustee Dale Scherbring, CPBE, provided insight into creating the new scholarship. “Gino was a great example of a dedicated broadcast engineer. His leadership throughout his career will be honored by using his generous financial gift to continue to grow and educate youth and professionals in the broadcast Industry. I am honored to assist in recognizing Gino Ricciardelli.”

On the creation of the scholarship, Paul Kaminski, CBT, chair of SBE Chapter 1 Binghamton, said, “Gino was instrumental in making the transition from analog to digital television in the Binghamton market. At an age when many engineers would have retired, his contributions to the process made that transition easier for all involved. His legacy of professionalism, competence and dedication will live on through the Ennes Scholarship that bears his name.”

Separately, the Trust also approved a proposal to fund a new version the SBE Certification sample test software called SBE CertPreview. While the SBE Certification Committee develops the new ATSC 3.0 Specialist Certification, it will also need to add sample test questions for CertPreview, which is due for a program update.
About the Ennes Educational Foundation Trust
The Harold Ennes Scholarship Fund Trust was initiated by Indianapolis Chapter 25 in 1980 in memory of Harold E. Ennes, author of many textbooks for broadcast and broadcast-related communications training and a member of the Indianapolis chapter. Ennes (pronounced “ENN-ess”) was a member of the SBE’s national Certification Committee and made many contributions to the early development of the Certification Program. To encourage greater growth, the Scholarship Trust was transferred by Chapter 25 to the SBE national organization to administer in 1981. The name of the Trust was changed in 1995 to the “Harold Ennes Educational Foundation Trust” to fully embrace its expanded role.

Three trustees are appointed by the Society of Broadcast Engineers Board of Directors and are responsible for the operation of the Ennes Educational Foundation Trust. They are Douglas W. Garlinger, CPBE, CBNT, Fishers, IN; Tony Peterle, CPBE, Miami, FL; and Dale Scherbring, CPBE, Timonium, MD. The Trustees appoint a scholarship committee to select the recipients of the Ennes Scholarships each year. More information about the Ennes Educational Foundation Trust is available at sbe.org/ennes.

SBE Suggests Chapters Suspend In-person Meetings

The safety of our members and their families are our utmost concern. During this time of heightened concern for public health with the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the SBE asks that SBE chapters not conduct in-person meetings in March and April, but rather, meet virtually through any capabilities you may have available to you.

One possible source for a remote presentation is the SBE Chapter Speaker List. Several SBE Sustaining Members offer program presentations to chapters. Contact them to see if a remote presentation could be scheduled for your chapter.

SBE Cancels 2020 NAB Show Events

As you most likely have heard, the NAB announced on March 11 that it has “decided not to move forward with the NAB Show in April,” due to the evolving situation involving the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The SBE events and meetings scheduled to coincide with the April NAB Show have been cancelled. This includes the SBE Ennes Workshop held in conjunction with the BEIT Conference. The SBE at PBS TechCon educational programs have also been cancelled.

The NAB has indicated that it is looking at potential alternatives to hold the show at a later date. Like everyone else, the SBE will await further word from the NAB and consider options for taking part.

Ennes Workshop

SBE Ennes WorkshopFor the 26th consecutive year, the SBE is a conference partner with the NAB Broadcast Engineering and IT Conference, the longest running and largest of the NAB Show conferences. Kicking off the BEITC on Saturday morning, April 18, is the Ennes Workshop, presented in conjunction with the SBE. Industry veterans Tom Mikkelsen and Stan Moote co-chair a cutting edge lineup, called “Multiplatform SuperSession.”

The Ennes program begins with Madeleine Noland, president of ATSC, who will provide an update on the progress of ATSC 3.0 and various market transition activities. Next up is a panel of experts in a supersession called Multiplatform is Key. It will include tangible examples and finish up with a panel moderated by IABM CTO Stan Moote to debate the various opportunities to simplify workflows.

Next Generation Audio is the next session, continuing on the multiplatform theme. The session focuses on Next Generation Audio (NGA) and how consumers will experience audio content in optimized quality, lining up with whatever platform they are using. The promise of NGA is to free producers from having to create multiple audio mixes by producing a multi-purpose audio package.

Then comes Understanding Internet for Video Transport, with Malik Kahn, former chairman of LTN Global. The Internet has become key for multiple platform delivery, backhauls and net distribution feeds. Malik explains how, where and why redundancy is essential.

IP/SMPTE ST 2110 Update and Implementations comes next with Karl Paulsen, CTO at Diversified. IP is vital for multiplatform operations. Karl will review some of the installs and how ST 2110 and SDI work in harmony.

BXF and TAXI Standards for Multi-Platform Distribution will be presented by Chris Lennon, president of MediAnswers. With recent developments in the fields of content delivery specifications, HDR, AFD, Proxies, Captioning/Subtitling and Automated QC have broadened the relevance of BXF (Broadcast Exchange Format). Chris will give an update on BXF and explain how the TAXI (Trackable Asset Cross-Platform Identification) initiative will provide an open, standardized means of tracking content across all forms of distribution. It will address many use cases, including audience measurement, ad insertion, second screen apps and a wide array of others.

The SBE @ PBS TechCon
SBE @ PBS TechConAfter a successful partnership in 2019, the SBE is again providing a program for the PBS TechCon. Held at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, the SBE program will be presented on Saturday, April 18.

The morning of the day-long session focuses on audio quality. Most have a fair grasp of the basics of microphones and how to capture sound, but there are nuances in capturing the best possible sound. Steve Savanyu, director of education services at Audio Technica, has a penchant for clear and precise explanation of the most esoteric and technical aspects of transducer physics and technology. He is also an adjunct professor of audio for video at Kent State University. Audio Technica will facilitate and support the program with the equipment necessary to demonstrate and teach miking and mixing.

The afternoon topic is “Managing Modulation for NextGen Broadcast.” The program will focus on the decision points of ATSC 3.0 implementation.
