SBE Suggests Chapters Suspend In-person Meetings

The safety of our members and their families are our utmost concern. During this time of heightened concern for public health with the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the SBE asks that SBE chapters not conduct in-person meetings in March and April, but rather, meet virtually through any capabilities you may have available to you.

One possible source for a remote presentation is the SBE Chapter Speaker List. Several SBE Sustaining Members offer program presentations to chapters. Contact them to see if a remote presentation could be scheduled for your chapter.

SBE@PBS TechCon 2019 Videos Available

ATSC 3.0 and the rapid launch of NextGen Broadcast were the drivers behind the first-ever SBE/PBS TechCon collaborative tutorial day, which was held April 6, 2019, at PBS TechCon in Las Vegas. The day-long tutorial, Launching ATSC 3.0 NextGen Broadcast: A Tutorial, covered what ATSC 3.0 means for the future of broadcast. The presentations were recorded, and the SBE is now making them available for online viewing.

Six tutorial sections will be available. The first two are available through the SBE online registration system. They are Part 4: NextGen/ATSC 3.0 Transmitter Conversion and Part 6: NextGen Broadcast/ATSC 3.x Scheduler.

Registered attendees of the SBE @ PBS TechCon 2019 will receive an email with instructions on how to view the videos. Others can register to view the videos through the SBE Webinar library via the SBE website. The cost for SBE members is $59, non-members is $89. SBE members with SBE MemberPlus can view the videos for free.

The remaining four sections will be made available in the coming weeks.

Free Webinar on IP Microwave STL’s presented by DoubleRadius

The FCC abolished the last link rule opening up Part 101 licensed frequencies to broadcasters. New frequencies have opened up that can be used for reliable STL’s. These frequencies, like 950mhz, 7ghz, and 13Ghz are licensed frequencies but with the ability to run high speed bi-directional data rates. These frequencies have the ability to provide up to a gigabyte of bi-directional throughput to your transmission sites.

Taking place June 27, this webinar will inform you on these new licensed frequencies and the design do’s and don’ts for these frequencies. The webinar also looks at a live path profile showing what can be done today.

3 hour online webinar offers affordable RF safety training

Strickland monitoring RF

The SBE RF Safety Course, presented by Richard Strickland of RF Safety Solutions, takes place at 1:30 p.m. ET on July 24.  Registration has been simplified so that attendees can participate from any location with Internet access. Among other topics, Strickland will discuss how to prove compliance at a broadcast site, the biological effects of RF radiation and the distinct differences between RF radiation and ionizing radiation, FCC and OSHA regulations and RF hazard protection equipment.

A previous attendee of the course said, “Richard did a great job of providing examples, answering questions, and keeping the material interesting. I appreciate the ability to download slides for future reference.”

The course is designed for broadcast station personnel, including chief and assistant chief engineers, transmitter site engineers, ENG and SNG maintenance personnel and management that need to have an understanding of RF safety issues and regulations. Is your transmitter ready for summer? This will help –

As both radio and television broadcast engineers are expected to do more with less, being pro-active with respect to maintaining your transmitter and studio sites will guard against disasters. This is especially true when preparing your site for the summertime, after winter has taken its toll.

Webinars by SBE has a webinar on springtime maintenance to help you get ready for summer. Drawing from his experience as a chief engineer, and in writing Radio World’s popular Workbench column, John Bisset leads engineers through a series of inspections and tasks to prepare your site for warmer weather. Along the way, he offers some engineering nuggets to improve your maintenance efficiency as well.

This 2 hour webinar is available free to SBE Members, thanks to Broadcast Supply Worldwide.

Free Webinar on IP Microwave STL’s – thanks DoubleRadius!

Broadcasters have been needing and asking the FCC for more channels and bandwidth for years now. We need more! With the growth of HD audio and video the need for reliable STL’s continues to grow every year.

In August of 2011 the FCC abolished the last link rule opening up Part 101 licensed frequencies to broadcasters. Finally the FCC has opened up new frequencies that can be used for reliable STL’s. These frequencies like 950mhz, 7ghz, and 13Ghz are licensed frequencies but with the ability to run high speed bidirectional data rates. These frequencies have the ability to provide up to a gigabit of bidirectional throughput to your transmission sites.

Taking place June 27, this webinar will inform you on these new licensed frequencies and the design do’s and don’ts for these frequencies. The webinar also looks at a live path profile showing what can be done today.

How Broadcasters can benefit from Media Asset Management

Broadcasters have the opportunity to hear from Theresa Regli at The Real Story Group to understand not only the different components of a Media Asset Management (MAM) system, but also to help them identify their own requirements more clearly.  In addition, understand how various MAM system services work, find out who some of the particular MAM vendors are and the different industries they focus on, and differentiate among alternate architectures and approaches. This Webinar by SBE takes place May 16, 2013 at 2 p.m. Eastern.  Learn  More

Understanding IP Multicast in a Broadcast Environment

Webinars by SBE continues to offer IP networking training in the next webinar titled “IP Networking, part 6 – an Introduction to IP Multicast“.  Taking place April 25, 2013, the webinar explores Multicast terminology, the addressing utilized, switching and routing in a multicast IP network and more.  Wayne Pecena, CPBE, CBNE, who is presenting the webinar, will provide practical implementation examples to deliver AoIP and IPTV content in order to illustrate the theoretical concepts presented.

If you can’t find the content, you really don’t have it

It is often repeated that “if you can’t find the content, you really don’t have it.” What were once boxes of tape neatly labeled on a shelf is now most often files with cryptic names in some invisible place in cyber space. Digital asset management systems organize and make this content searchable. We all know how important metadata tagging is, but we broadcasters often see ourselves as living in a largely “turn and burn” world where an asset can have a short shelf life. Asset management systems can be expensive and complicated, suited for curation tasks like managing sports or news footage. Still, some larger facilities are now very dependent on asset management, and as time goes on there appears to be right sized solutions being developed for broadcasters. More importantly, the topic of asset management more and more frequently comes up in broadcast facilities; often in the context of moving a station’s content to the cloud, and as stations reach easily into very large remote storage locations. Asset management has a language of its own, and basic workflow principles that broadcast engineers should have a conversational knowledge of.

On May 16, Theresa Regli will present a webinar on Media Asset Management. This Webinar by SBE will focus on the ins and outs of the software systems that manage broadcast media assets and provide an excellent understanding of Media Asset Management “MAM” components and functions. Practical application requirements will be reviewed to understand who are the industry players, how the various MAM system services work, and understanding the implementation architecture approach. Theresa is a twenty-year veteran of the content technology industry, and offers a unique industry perspective to SBE members needing to learn about Media Asset Management.
