SBE Suggests Chapters Suspend In-person Meetings

The safety of our members and their families are our utmost concern. During this time of heightened concern for public health with the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the SBE asks that SBE chapters not conduct in-person meetings in March and April, but rather, meet virtually through any capabilities you may have available to you.

One possible source for a remote presentation is the SBE Chapter Speaker List. Several SBE Sustaining Members offer program presentations to chapters. Contact them to see if a remote presentation could be scheduled for your chapter.

SBE@PBS TechCon 2019 Videos Available

ATSC 3.0 and the rapid launch of NextGen Broadcast were the drivers behind the first-ever SBE/PBS TechCon collaborative tutorial day, which was held April 6, 2019, at PBS TechCon in Las Vegas. The day-long tutorial, Launching ATSC 3.0 NextGen Broadcast: A Tutorial, covered what ATSC 3.0 means for the future of broadcast. The presentations were recorded, and the SBE is now making them available for online viewing.

Six tutorial sections will be available. The first two are available through the SBE online registration system. They are Part 4: NextGen/ATSC 3.0 Transmitter Conversion and Part 6: NextGen Broadcast/ATSC 3.x Scheduler.

Registered attendees of the SBE @ PBS TechCon 2019 will receive an email with instructions on how to view the videos. Others can register to view the videos through the SBE Webinar library via the SBE website. The cost for SBE members is $59, non-members is $89. SBE members with SBE MemberPlus can view the videos for free.

The remaining four sections will be made available in the coming weeks.

The SBE RF Safety Course, presented by Richard Strickland of RF Safety Solutions, takes place at 1:30 p.m. ET on July 24.  Registration has been simplified so that attendees can participate from any location with Internet access. Among other topics, Strickland will discuss how to prove compliance at a broadcast site, the biological effects of RF radiation and the distinct differences between RF radiation and ionizing radiation, FCC and OSHA regulations and RF hazard protection equipment.

Understanding IP Multicast in a Broadcast Environment

If you can’t find the content, you really don’t have it

It is often repeated that “if you can’t find the content, you really don’t have it.” What were once boxes of tape neatly labeled on a shelf is now most often files with cryptic names in some invisible place in cyber space. Digital asset management systems organize and make this content searchable. We all know how important metadata tagging is, but we broadcasters often see ourselves as living in a largely “turn and burn” world where an asset can have a short shelf life. Asset management systems can be expensive and complicated, suited for curation tasks like managing sports or news footage. Still, some larger facilities are now very dependent on asset management, and as time goes on there appears to be right sized solutions being developed for broadcasters. More importantly, the topic of asset management more and more frequently comes up in broadcast facilities; often in the context of moving a station’s content to the cloud, and as stations reach easily into very large remote storage locations. Asset management has a language of its own, and basic workflow principles that broadcast engineers should have a conversational knowledge of.
